AMI's Group Psychotherapy
In addition to individual psychotherapy sessions and personal advisement, Dr. Wilson also offers two ongoing therapy groups. The first of these groups meet every Thursday evening and is "process" oriented. The second of these groups meets every Friday evening and is "addiction" oriented. Dr. Wilson is a member of a 12-step group and has been in recovery from drug and alcohol abuse for nearly fifteen years.
Like individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy is founded in mindfulness and the groups are often opened with a few minutes of silent meditation. Members are also periodically instructed in mindfulness meditation and are asked to meditate (to practice the techniques of mindfulness) outside of the weekly group sessions. The cost per member per week is $30. Groups are limited to eight members.
Currently, both groups are open to new members. To join either of these groups, or to get more detailed information, please contact Dr. Parker Wilson directly.
Here is a deeper explanation of both groups:
Process Group: Thursdays from 7:00pm - 8:30pm. This group is open to new members. A process group is a place where a diverse group of individuals meet (for a set time every week) to discuss and share whatever is going on in their minds and lives. All the group members have different and varying struggles and challenges that they are seeking to explore and transform. Under the guidance and supervision of Dr. Wilson, "process group" psychotherapy clients learn to open themselves up and work with their respective issues by using the group as a foundation of insight, openness and awareness. Clients are often amazed at how a group of total strangers can quickly transform into a source of wisdom and insight.
Addiction Group: Fridays from 7:00pm - 8:30pm. This group is also open to new members. The addiction group is based in both mindfulness and 12-step concepts. Members of this group are all struggling with some sort of compulsion or addictive tendency. This "addictive tendency" can be an unhealthy habit of "numbing out" in any number of ways including: food, sex, drugs, television, gambling, drinking, etc. Clients quickly learn to use the group as a foundation of awareness of and insight into their specific ways of numbing out. As the work progresses, and again using the group as a foundation of safety and awareness, clients then learn to more effectively work with their own afflictive mental habits. One point must be made absolutely clear: the addiction group is in NO WAY a substitute for 12-step work. It is offered as a humble supplement to all 12-step programs.
