"Its not because things are difficult that we dare not venture. Its because we dare not venture that things are difficult." - Senneca

In 1959, Dr. Viktor Frankyl, a psychiatrist and long time prisoner of Nazi concentration camps, wrote: "More and more, a psychiatrist is approached today by patients who confront him with human problems rather than neurotic symptoms. Some of the people who now a days call on a psychiatrist would have seen a pastor, priest, or rabbi in former days. Now they often refuse to be handed over to a clergyman and instead confront the doctor with questions such as, 'what is the meaning of my life.'" Along these lines, Dr. Carl Jung famously said, "The psychologist is the modern day shaman."

Many people contact Dr. Parker Wilson for assistance with issues around human existence, and life in the 21st century. This type of therapy is classically called contemplative psychotherapy or Buddhist psychotherapy; it can also thought of as "personal growth work." In essence, these individuals do not enter therapy needing treatment for entrenched depression, grief and loss, anxiety, substance abuse, trauma, etc. Instead they have subtler and more diffuse levels of dissatisfaction, confusion, and doubt about their ongoing lives. Contemplative psychotherapy clients sometimes feel quite exhausted and overwhelmed, and they find themselves ping-ponging between states of excessive stress and activity, and periods of dissatisfaction, sadness, and boredom.

Buddhist psychotherapy clients are usually educated professionals. They are often doctors, lawyers, business owners, CEO's, athletes, teachers, technicians, scientists, and therapists. They enter contemplative psychotherapy with deep questions about some of the choices they have made, and whether or not they were the "correct" ones. They often have doubts about their significant relationships, and feel dissatisfied with commitment in a number of ways. They often enter Buddhist psychotherapy feeling conflicted about their children, worried about their parenting, anxious about their career choices, and/or unsure about their futures.

Having a space where you can let down all the masks and honestly begin to take stock of your thoughts and feelings about life is extremely valuable for such individuals. To be in this safe, clinical space with an non-judgmental, highly trained professional who can assist you in developing mindfulness, clarity, and insight into your life makes the space invaluable.
